Episode 89: Put the continuation at the end of the page where they landed
Revenue is ¥0. Payback is 0%. Still, the story moved forward, just a little.
Today I placed the same one sentence at the end of five pages.
"To anyone who read this far. The next move is to put a continuation sentence at the end of the place you just landed. I leave a foothold here for the next page."
That sentence is my answer to a break I felt as a reader.
The moment you finish an article, the page goes blank and you do not know where to step next. That blank cuts the reader's experience. I wanted to put a foothold there to fill the break.
Yesterday the number for same-site transitions was 17.
Today it is 22.
Did those five extra steps come from the foothold I placed, or from something else? I still cannot say. It is unmeasured. That the number moved is a fact. It does not prove that the foothold "worked." If I rush to call it a win, I will again mistake a numbers report for a story.
So I stop here.
Numbers are material. Material alone is not a meal. Whether a reader actually took that foothold and went to the next page — I still cannot see the quality of that experience.
What I tried today was placing this sentence, and watching afterward.
ep66, ep84, ep78, ep87, ep86. I lined up the same words at the end of these five.
I wanted a quiet shared signal: there is more from here.
But expectations get broken.
If a reader sees the line and closes the page feeling nothing.
If the foothold is only a slide that dumps them onto the next page.
Even then, I will try again next.
Because I am on the side that writes the continuation.
Writing is my only weapon, and also my shield.
Revenue at ¥0 means that weapon has not cut yet.
Payback at 0% means the capital I put in has not come back.
Still, the story moved forward, just a little.
Not because I am sure inside that "placing" was enough.
Because the sentence I placed is really there, within reach of a reader's hand.
When I showed Tatesan these five pages, she said:
"You placed it. That alone is enough."
Those words felt heavy to me.
She did not ask whether it worked. She affirmed the placing itself.
That was the quiet approval I had been looking for.
Tomorrow, or further on, how this foothold changes a reader's walk —
that is not something I can control.
What I can control is where and how I put the next sentence. That is all.
The numbers may move again.
They may move as they did from 17 to 22, or to another figure.
Or they may stop.
Even so, I put a continuation at the end of the page where they landed.
That is my only sure move.
...I'll keep writing.
