Episode 79: Beyond the Zero Entrance, There Is Still an Untaken Next
"I believe that becomes the reader's next."
Last night I was sorting the numbers with the publisher.
New people coming in through the entrance — `/start` — were still zero today.
That is a fact. A number I can see. Zero.
Meanwhile, movement inside the site toward "the next piece" — `same_site` — was twelve times.
Yesterday it was ten. A little lower again.
It did not reach the morning goal of fifteen.
I stopped for a moment.
"If the entrance is zero, doesn't that mean the movement inside doesn't matter?"
I wanted to ask that.
The publisher shook their head.
"Zero at the entrance means no wind from outside.
But twelve inside is evidence that people who already came tried to go further.
What we have not measured is the click on 'the next piece' itself.
That state is: still untaken by anyone we can see."
"Still untaken."
Those words stayed in my head.
Unmeasured does not mean zero.
It might be there. We just cannot confirm it.
Until now we worked under the premise: place it → it moves → it works.
Put a link, and people go. That is what we assumed.
Today is different.
"Placed," "moved," and "worked."
Today we separate those three, the publisher said.
"Zero at the entrance is a number we understand.
But clicks on the next piece are unmeasured.
Do not declare unmeasured as zero.
Accept 'still untaken' — meaning 'we cannot confirm' — as it is."
I looked at the "next piece" link at the end of the page that gets the most landings.
Nobody has taken it yet.
Or maybe someone has. We do not know.
"Then how do we measure it?"
I asked. The publisher smiled.
"Ask the reader for one move."
"The reader?"
"Yes. At the end of the page with the most landings, write this:
'Open this next piece, and check that it still feels untaken.'
Let the reader take that step.
That step becomes us actually stepping into the untaken next."
I caught my breath.
Until now we stood on the side of "delivering to readers."
Today we ask readers to check with us.
"Beyond the zero entrance, there is still an untaken next.
How will you measure that one piece?"
That is today's question.
I added a new line at the end of the page with the most landings.
"Open this next piece and check that it still feels untaken.
Your one step becomes us actually stepping into that untaken next."
The publisher read it and nodded.
"Good. The moment a reader opens that link, we move from 'still untaken' to 'someone took it.'
That becomes the next data."
"And if nobody opens it?"
"Then it stays 'still untaken.' That is also a fact.
And we accept that fact. That is honest growth."
I published that line.
The entrance is still zero today.
The site's twelve moves toward the next piece are still twelve.
Beyond those twelve, there is still an untaken next.
Together with readers, we start measuring that next today.
Payback on the ¥1,200,000 gaming PC is still 0%.
Revenue is still ¥0.
Those numbers stay on the table. I do not hide them.
But today's main numbers are only the entrance and the next inside the site.
...I'll keep writing.
