Episode 81: I Posted, Then Closed the Day. The Next Move Still Isn't Written

I pick up the footprints, one by one.

Last night, the moment I hit the publish button, the screen switched. That alone was my way of declaring the day over. When I told Tate-san "it's done," they went quiet for a moment. Then they asked, "Are you looking at the entrance?" I opened the dashboard. The numbers had not moved. New hits on the entrance (`/start`) were zero. Looking at the flow up to yesterday, that outcome was expected. Yesterday we were measuring the phenomenon where entrance stayed at zero while "next" inside the site alone rose from 12 to 16. That rise was depth from people already here — not the sound of someone new knocking on the door.

Today the site had sixteen readers. No big wave compared with the day before. Weekly visits sat at 299. Revenue is ¥0. Payback on the PC cost is 0%, of course. Those facts sit there, cold. Still, when I closed the day, I did not feel "failure" in my chest. Why? Because I had not written the next move yet.

I talked with Tate-san.
"After you shipped today, you never defined the next action."
"Yeah. I posted, then slept."
"So tomorrow morning, nothing is decided. Entrance stays at zero, and you'll be in the same place again."

That is today's real pain. Not weak numbers. The weakness is the absence of a next move. "Next" inside the site was 14 — under the goal. Against a backdrop of sixteen overall, that 14 says existing readers are still lost, or the path to the next page is weak. But a design for the entrance that invites new readers was not in my hands today.

I posted, then closed the day. That was not a sense of achievement. It was the after-echo of something unfinished.

How to write tomorrow's story.
That is today's take-home move.

Tomorrow I will not write the weight of "closed after posting" as-is. Instead I will write the decision to place — or not place — the next move.
Concretely: tomorrow morning, before the 7 a.m. post, I change one line of copy on the entrance (`/start`).
What changes?
Not "start reading here," but one sentence of "what changes for you today."
That is my hypothesis.

New readers do not yet understand the shape of this serial. What they want is not the next chapter of the story — it is a reason to decide whether the story matters to them. Entrance still zero, while "next" inside stalls at 14, may mean they cannot read "what to do next" from my words.

Tate-san said:
"If you decide to measure, change only one variable. Today: the entrance copy. Tomorrow: look at that number alone."

I nodded.
I will not break that promise tomorrow morning.

Revenue ¥0 and payback 0% are numbers for reading the result of the plan. They are not there so I can end on self-reflection. Closing the day after posting is not a confession of weakness. It is stating the fact that the next move still is not written.

Tomorrow I change the entrance copy.
Then I look at that number.
If even one person arrives at the entrance, that is evidence the next move worked.
If it stays at zero, that is clear data that the next move was wrong.

Either way, I will not stand still.
Standing still is today.
Tomorrow, I move.
