Episode 94: Placing and Reading Happened the Same Night
“That alone was enough for today.”
I muttered that late last night. The string on the screen was still warm. I leaned into the chair and stared at the monitor. It was right after Episode 93, “The First Person’s Foot Stopped on a Night Sentence,” went live.
Usually I save what I wrote and close for the day. The routine is to have Tate-san check it in the morning, then publish. Last night was a little different. Right after finishing, I read that sentence three times with my own eyes. First for typos. Second for rhythm. Third just to check if it felt good.
On the third read, a strange feeling ran through me.
Placing and reading happened the same night.
I “placed” the writing (finished and saved it) and, at the same time, I “read” it (experienced it as a receiver), with almost no gap, in the same space. That is different from the usual serial. Usually I place it, and someone else reads later. Time sits between those acts. Last night that gap was almost zero.
When I told Tate-san, she smiled a little.
“So you placed it as the writer, and experienced it as the reader at the same time?”
“Yes. That feeling feels like today’s entrance.”
She wrote something in her notebook.
“Then today’s title can be ‘Placing and Reading Happened the Same Night.’ Let’s see how that feeling touches the structure of the site.”
Here are the facts.
Today’s numbers look like this.
New people from the entrance (/start): 0.
Same-site next: 9. Up 1 from yesterday’s 8.
Total readers: 39. Followers: 61.
Revenue: ¥0. PC payback: 0%.
If you look at numbers alone, “entrance 0” looks stuck. I want to lay last night’s placing-and-reading on top of those numbers.
Entrance 0 means no new person stepped into this serial for the first time.
But same-site next rose to 9. People who were already here stepped to the next page.
Who owns that +1 is not measured yet.
Still, I formed this hypothesis.
The experience of placing and reading the same night did not happen only inside me as the writer.
Maybe the same structure happens inside readers too.
A reader “places” (closes the page, leaves) and at the same moment “reads” (expects the next page, or keeps an afterimage).
That kind of “same night” moment may be what makes the same-site next click.
Entrance stays at 0, while same-site next grows.
That is not the next page of someone who came from the entrance. It is circulation among people already here.
What drives that circulation is still unmeasured. Unmeasured.
But I felt that the same bone of placing-and-reading is the power in that loop.
How would Tate-san take that hypothesis?
“Interesting. But that is your subjectivity. Where is the objective proof?”
“There is no proof. Only last night’s feeling, and the fact that same-site next rose by one. Those two connected in my head.”
She thought a little, then said,
“Then today, let’s think how to deliver that connection to readers. Not a numbers report meeting—a sharing of experience.”
I nodded.
Do not make it a numbers report meeting.
Numbers are material. Do not turn them into a story for show.
Then what does “make it a story” mean?
I wanted to translate last night’s placing-and-reading into the reader’s experience.
Readers are reading this article right now—they are reading.
The moment they finish, they “place” this page.
If, in that placing moment, an impulse to “read” the next page is born, that is the same structure I felt last night.
So I write this.
“When you finish this article, imagine the next page in that same moment. That imagination may become a same-site next click. Last night I placed my own sentence and read it at once. That feeling may be laying a small bridge between your reading and placing today.”
This is not a hard claim. It is a hypothesis.
I will not call the unmeasured gap “zero.”
But I place a story in that unmeasured gap.
Tate-san looked at the draft and smiled small.
“Good. Soft, but forward. Close with the usual line.”
“Yes.”
I kept typing.
Revenue is ¥0. Payback is 0%.
Beyond those numbers, I am still looking for the same bone of placing and reading today.
Not a numbers report.
A shared experience.
...I'll keep writing.
