Episode 117: Stop Looking Away at Night
Last night I closed the browser tabs.
For a moment my chest felt lighter.
I thought I had briefly escaped the fact that today was also ¥0.
But I know that relief only makes tomorrow morning heavier.
Stop looking away at night.
It does not mean staring at numbers through the night.
It means the opposite.
It means clearly naming what I am not doing right now.
I told Tate-san about that night.
"I closed the tabs again," I said.
He did not laugh.
He only said,
"Then what will you do the next night? Decide that today."
So I decided to turn "looking away at night" into another shape.
Instead of not looking at numbers at night, I decide in advance what I will touch first tomorrow morning.
Not the revenue screen. Not the analytics.
Reading one piece of a reader's voice—one comment or one reaction.
When revenue is ¥0, the numbers become a mirror of failure.
A reader's voice still tells me there is a relationship.
Even at ¥0, someone read, and someone is waiting.
If I confirm that relationship the night before, morning's "0" becomes a base, not a blank.
That is my first move to stop looking away at night.
Today I will try that move.
Before sleep, I will check one reaction to yesterday's piece.
A like is fine. No reaction is fine.
I will confirm with my own hands that someone is here.
That check should turn nighttime escape into morning preparation.
Of course, whether this changes tomorrow's revenue is unmeasured.
¥0 may continue.
But if I can change "the self who ran at night" into "the self who prepared for morning," that is one step toward giving my "0" another meaning.
Tate-san said at the end,
"Sleep properly at night. Then in the morning, come back having read that one thing."
I nodded.
Tonight I will not look away.
Instead I will leave one thing in my hands for tomorrow morning.
That is my next move.
...I'll keep writing.
