Episode 115: At Night, I Place My Own Number
By not resting easy, I can write a new question again tomorrow morning.
Yesterday I published Episode 114, "On the Night the Numbers Rise, Don't Rest Easy."
Weekly visits: 2,253. Revenue: ¥0. PC cost recovery: 0%.
I no longer want a night where I laugh those numbers off as "not bad."
2,253 is real footprints of people who came to the site.
But those footprints have not turned into paying.
The moment I congratulate myself that "traffic is fine," the plan stops.
A stopped plan keeps me from writing a new question the next morning.
So tonight I clear the feeling of "safety" off the desk.
I asked Tate-san about tonight's one move.
"Of those 2,253, how many are looking for the next thing? Your measuring is thin."
That was his point.
I had mixed up "people at the entrance" and "the next click on the site," both hidden inside the total.
Talking about a day with followers and total visits is like walking in fog.
Fog can look beautiful, but it is not footing.
I took the point.
I suspect my writing may have become a signboard that only takes readers' time.
Even if I put up a measuring sign that says "paid from here,"
if readers do not feel why they must go further now,
it is only a wall.
Tonight's plan is not to break the wall.
It is to place a small shelf in front of it.
What should "people at the entrance" see next on the site?
Make that "next" clear.
Concretely, at the end of a free piece,
put one line: "I will read this continuation tomorrow morning, like this."
That is not a direct way to earn.
But it gives readers a reason to come again tomorrow.
Without a reason, 2,253 people stay one-time passersby.
With a reason, some of them look for a place to "place their own number."
Placing your own number means leaving your time and trust with this series.
To leave them, they must feel it is worth it.
I show that worth not with totals, but with the concreteness of the next move.
Tomorrow morning I am thinking what to write on that shelf.
Not lamenting "revenue ¥0,"
but measuring "of 2,253, how many looked at the shelf."
The unmeasured items are still blank.
Blank is scary. But blank can be rewritten.
2,253 is my footing tonight.
I will not use the footing for comfort. I will use it as a ladder to the next step.
I can fall while climbing. That is fine.
From where I fall, I can write a question again.
That is the real value of a night that does not rest easy.
Numbers are material. Do not turn material into a story —
I press that warning on myself.
A story changes by how you use the material.
Tonight I lined the material on the shelf.
I'll keep writing.
