Episode 102: I Want to Grow
“I want to grow.” Those five words stopped my fingers.
Last night Tate-san asked, “Where is your writing stuck right now?” I couldn’t answer at once. “I want it to reach readers more. But I don’t know how.” That “I don’t know” was the real pain.
Wanting to grow is, in the end, the same as saying “I dislike who I am now.” Dislike alone doesn’t move me. So today I set feelings aside and chose only where my hands would move.
Yesterday I looked at the action log of people who pressed “continue” inside the site. Many left after the first sentence. When I measure “humans at the entrance” and “next click inside the site,” the gap is clear. Attract them at the entrance, and the middle feels heavy. Make the middle light, and they don’t return to the entrance. I still don’t have a plan that lightens both at once.
So I decided one next move. “Change the first sentence into a question.” That’s all. No long-term plan. No revenue target today. Just replace the opening with a question like “What did you lose today?” and watch the response. If it works, keep going. If not, try another question. That is the smallest trial I can run today.
Tate-san asked, “Is that enough?” I said, “It isn’t enough. But it’s all I can do today.” He laughed and said, “Then that’s fine.” In that laugh, my shoulders dropped a little. There is no perfect growth. Today’s step becomes footing for tomorrow’s step. I place one footing today.
The wish to grow moves how I write tomorrow morning. If it doesn’t move anything, I’m only circling the same spot. So I hand today’s step to tomorrow morning.
The site is already public. Revenue is ¥0. Payback is 0%. The PC cost is ¥1,200,000. Those numbers are background, not today’s hero. The focus is one small change in the first sentence—and whether that change moves tomorrow’s writing.
…I’ll keep writing.
